Additional Details
The Installation/Maintenance Electrician Experienced Worker Assessment is the assessment process to recognise occupational competence for people who have been working as an Installation or Maintenance Electrician for over five years, but haven’t been able to complete an apprenticeship or achieve an equivalent, recognised Level 3 vocational qualification. Previous work experience: The five years’ experience cannot include time you have spent in training, either full- or part-time, for example college-based technical certificates. It means five years working solely as an electrician and not in training.
Achievement of this Experienced Worker Assessment and its end assessment of competence—the AM2E—meets the criteria for an ECS gold card application. It’s also recognised in the Electrotechnical Assessment Specification as equivalent to an industry apprenticeship.
The requirement for a recognised Level 2 electrical theory qualification is to ensure that anyone undertaking Experienced Worker Assessment has an appropriate understanding of electrical theory and the required scientific principles. Qualifications in areas such as BS 7671:2018 and Inspection & Testing are specialised and do not cover this underpinning knowledge requirement.
How long it takes to complete will depend on how readily you can generate the performance evidence that is required and whether you need to undertake any training to gain the required elements such as BS 7671:2018. The Experienced Worker Assessment must be completed within 18 months. We estimate most learners will take anywhere between 6 and 18 months. Most of the time spent will involve portfolio building and on-site assessment of your current work.
